I tried working with them in my high school art class many years ago, but they were so messy that I got fed up and hurried along to something else. Oddly enough, I love working with charcoal (even though I hate having to redo areas that get smudged by my hand), and it's just as messy.
Brand, unfortunately, is incredibly important in regard to pastels. I suspect they might have been a less-reliable kind, since it was a high school settings. It's like a completely different medium when you're using the dirt cheap kind, as is the case with watercolor and acrylics. Personally, I loathe getting my hands dirty and having to clean up, but pastels are a solid middle ground between painting and drawing, and the feeling of directly handling the colored pigments is unrivaled, in my opinion.
I do street portraits, so it often takes less than ten minutes to do something like this. This means every stroke is important, but after doing it for so long, you get a feel for it.
Ha. It's been a while since I've done it, so I sort of cringe at how it looks, at this point. I'm glad people are still liking it, though. Thanks for the good words!
